SR TIMBER SUPPORTS INSTALLER SHOWHOUSE

SR Timber has supplied its graded PREMIUM GOLD® timber roofing batten and Blue Label 5X Western Red Cedar Shingles for the HAUS at the Installer Show, which is due to open next week at the NEC in Birmingham. The HAUS, which is to be built in three days to form a central feature at the event, promises to demonstrate a dwelling that is sustainable, innovative, adaptable, healthy, cost-effective, reusable and designed for circularity.

The two-storey house, designed by architects IF_DO, uses Natural Building Systems’ NBS ADEPT solution to create the structure and fabric of the building. It will showcase the potential for natural building materials, combined with an industrialised approach to construction, assisting the industry in meeting the government’s target of 1.5 million homes over the next five years.

The SR Timber PREMIUM GOLD® battens and Blue Label 5X Western Red Cedar Shingles will form part of the roof system used on the house and will be exposed to view at the show house, as it is manufactured to showcase as many of the materials as possible that comprise the structure. A total of 1000 linear metres of batten were used on the project, and 45m2 of cedar shingles.

The batten has easily accessible online product data sheets which outline a very clear overview of the flagship production certification, from grading processes to treatment details to legality and sustainability certification. Importantly, their batten is graded in its board form but also in a secondary process where individual battens are graded to ensure size consistency, ensuring that the correctly sized 25x50mm and 25x38mm battens are produced on every occasion, strictly adhering to British Standards BS5534

Chloe Donovan, Managing Director at NBS, sums up the ethos behind the HAUS: “NBS is addressing both the housing crisis and climate change by combining biobased materials with digital fabrication techniques, creating energy efficient buildings which also store biogenic carbon.” She explains that the company was created in recognition of the wasteful elements of the construction industry and a desire to find a solution. She says: “Our goal is to combine natural, sustainable materials with modern technology to deliver healthier buildings that are cost-effective. While the materials and some of the approaches we’re using are not new to the construction industry, our particular kit-of-parts approach with demountable panels does get people interested. It is a different way of doing it, but it’s also designed to make the installers’ jobs easier and more efficient.”

The HAUS has already been built, pre assembled in Suffolk in a test run before it goes to the NEC and is built in just 3 days for the show. The aim is for the HAUS to go on to the University of Suffolk for research on energy performance in the next phase of the HAUS project.

SR Timber will be manning the house for the duration of the show, for any questions.
